The communities of Monroe, West Monroe and Sterlington united for the 2nd Annual Water Sweep Event held on 15 September 2007. An overwhelming 5.88 tons of litter was picked up over approximately 30 river miles. One hundred twenty five volunteers participated with Keep Ouachita Parish Beautiful, Keep West Monroe Beautiful, Keep Monroe Beautiful and the Corps of Engineers to clean-up the shorelines and waterways of the Ouachita River. Four staging sites were provided by Monroe, West Monroe, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Moon Lake Marina. Equipment and manpower provided by Dillingham Marine Industries retrieved large items that would not be possible to otherwise obtain. More than 35 sponsors provided door prizes and funded tee-shirts for the volunteers. School groups, families, individuals and various organizations got involved in the event. The Ouachita River along with the bayou's feeding into it is vital to our cities. Keeping our waterways clean is a must for our future. Our cities citizens volunteered their time and efforts showing the pride and community spirit to help us Keep Louisiana Beautiful.
